The smoky flying squirrel is the only species in the genus Pteromyscus, making the genus monotypic. Its body measures 22–29 cm and its tail 18–23 cm, while recorded weight is roughly 142–255 g after conversion from the source's ounces. It occurs in Brunei, Indonesia, Peninsular Malaysia and southern Thailand, although its mapped range may be incomplete (Wikipedia, general species account).
It is nocturnal and forages in trees for fruit, nuts and fungi. Records from Borneo and Malaysia describe it as rarely encountered even in primary forest, the habitat with which it is chiefly associated. Its ability to travel depends on forest structure that permits gliding between trees (Wikipedia, general species account). It is Nationally Data Deficient (Thailand Red Data 2025).
