Callosciurus caniceps
Habitat
Forests, plantations and gardens
Range
Peninsular Malaysia, Thailand, southern Myanmar, southern China and possibly western Laos
Weight
248–252g in two adult males
The northern grey-bellied squirrel has a belly that is usually grey, sometimes reddish along the sides. Its upperparts vary with subspecies and season from grey through yellowish olive to reddish. Two adult males trapped in Malaysia weighed 247.7 g and 251.5 g; this small sample is presented as a measured record rather than a species-wide average (Wikipedia, general species account).
It lives in forests, plantations and gardens across Peninsular Malaysia, Thailand, southern Myanmar and southern China, with western Laos listed as possible. The species has also been introduced to Japan's Ryukyu Islands. Its use of planted and garden habitats distinguishes its documented setting from squirrels restricted to intact forest (Wikipedia, general species account). It is Nationally Near Threatened (Thailand Red Data 2025).
