Callosciurus prevostii
Diet
Mainly fruit, with some arthropods
Habitat
Primary and secondary forest, orchards, and palm and coconut plantations
Range
Peninsular Thailand to Sumatra, Borneo, northern Sulawesi and nearby islands
Prevost's squirrel, also called the Asian tricoloured squirrel, is a medium-sized, colourful tree squirrel. A measured adult male specimen from Malaysia had a head-and-body length of 25.7 cm, a 22 cm tail and a weight of 488 g; these figures describe that specimen rather than a species-wide average (Smithsonian National Museum specimen record).
The species is active by day and lives mainly in trees, descending chiefly to cross breaks in the canopy. It ranges from peninsular Thailand through Sumatra and Borneo to northern Sulawesi and nearby islands. It uses primary and secondary forest, orchards, and palm and coconut plantations. Fruit dominates its diet, supplemented by arthropods (Mammalian Species account).
