Basic stats

Habitat

Wet tropical rainforest, dry deciduous forest and monsoon forest

Range

Brunei, Indonesia, Malaysia and Thailand

Size

Head and body 10.7–11.5cm in two measured males

Weight

30g in one measured male

Temminck's flying squirrel is a small gliding squirrel whose coat varies geographically. Animals reported from Laos are more reddish brown and lack the white tail tip found in Malaysian populations. Two museum males from Johor measured 10.7 and 11.5 cm from head to body; one weighed 30 g, so these are specimen measurements rather than species averages (Animal Diversity Web; Smithsonian collection records).

It has been recorded in wet tropical rainforest, dry deciduous forest and monsoon forest. The Mammal Diversity Database lists Brunei, Indonesia, Malaysia and Thailand, while older treatments also included Myanmar and Laos; recent specialist work notes unresolved limits involving a related taxon. This uncertainty is why the range stat follows the current specialist database rather than older general summaries (Mammal Diversity Database; Animal Diversity Web).
