Size

Head and body 21.5–25cm; tail 24–29cm

The horse-tailed squirrel is the largest and most colourful Sundasciurus tree squirrel. Its head and body measure 21.5–25 cm and the tail 24–29 cm. The head, shoulders, forefeet and upperparts are grizzled grey, while the belly may be whitish, dull orange or reddish brown. Its long tail is commonly glossy black or grey barred with black (Wikipedia, general species account).

It occurs through the southern half of the Malay Peninsula, including southern Thailand and Malaysia, and on Sumatra and Borneo. It is most often recorded in lowland primary forest, but it also uses regrown logged forest and secondary forest. An old Vietnamese report has not been repeated in later range treatments and is therefore excluded from the range stat (Animal Diversity Web; Wikipedia, general species account).
