The black flying squirrel is a large, very dark member of the squirrel family. Its body measures 35.5–42.6 cm, the tail 41–47 cm and weight is around 900 g. The upperparts, cheeks and tail are dark grey-brown to nearly black, with paler speckling on the back; the underparts are slightly lighter (Wikipedia, general species account).
It occupies primary and secondary forest as well as wooded gardens in Brunei, Indonesia and Malaysia, sheltering in tree hollows. Fruit, nuts and other plant material make up its recorded diet. Females breed infrequently and produce a single young, a pattern associated with lower densities than many other squirrels (Wikipedia, general species account).
