Habitat
Dry and moist forest, plantations and gardens
Range
South and Southeast Asia
Weight
About 4.5–5.5g
The painted woolly bat is instantly recognizable by orange or scarlet fur, black-and-orange patterned wings and orange fingers. At roughly 4.5–5.5 g it is small, with broad wings suited to slow flight through vegetation. Its colour breaks up the outline among dead and living leaves rather than serving as bright display (species account; regional bat field guide).
It ranges from South Asia through mainland Southeast Asia and uses dry or moist forest, plantations and gardens. Individuals roost alone or in small groups among curled leaves, bird nests and other vegetation and glean small insects from foliage. Unlike many bats it is not principally a cave species (species-level natural-history accounts). It is Nationally Near Threatened (Thailand Red Data 2025).
