Basic stats

Habitat

Forest, caves and sites near water

Range

Southern China and mainland Southeast Asia

The large myotis is one of the biggest Asian Myotis, with long ears, a relatively robust skull and broad feet. Its dark brown upperparts contrast with paler underparts. Morphology and echolocation separate it from smaller regional mouse-eared bats (Mammal Diversity Database; regional bat field guide).

It ranges from southern China through Myanmar, Thailand, Laos and Vietnam. Roosts occur in caves, and foraging is associated with forest and water where it captures large insects in flight or from surfaces. Because published measurements vary geographically, a single range is not presented as universal (species-level acoustic and field studies). It is Nationally Vulnerable (Thailand Red Data 2025).
