Vespertilionidae

Alionoctula stenoptera

Basic stats

Habitat

Lowland rainforest

Range

Malay Peninsula, Sumatra and Borneo

The narrow-winged pipistrelle is an unusually long-winged bat whose molecular relationships led to creation of the genus Alionoctula. Compared with typical pipistrelles it has narrow wings suited to rapid flight and a distinctive cranial and dental combination (original phylogenetic study; Batnames).

Its Sundaic range includes the Malay Peninsula, Sumatra and Borneo, reaching southern Thailand. It is associated with lowland rainforest and hunts flying insects in more open spaces than many understorey bats. Roosting and breeding remain poorly documented (specialist taxonomic study; regional bat surveys). It is Nationally Near Threatened (Thailand Red Data 2025).
