Range

Northern South Asia through southern China and mainland Southeast Asia

The East Asian tailless roundleaf bat is a small, distinctive hipposiderid with a reduced tail, broad rounded ears and an elaborate noseleaf. Its short broad wings favour manoeuvring in cluttered forest. Recent work has revisited geographic variation and relationships within Coelops, making specimen-based identification important (Mammal Diversity Database; specialist Coelops revision).

Its range extends from northern South Asia through southern China and mainland Southeast Asia, including Thailand. It roosts in caves and forages for insects in forest, using high-frequency echolocation. The species is often locally recorded in small numbers and much of its reproduction and population ecology remains poorly quantified (regional taxonomic revision; Thai bat survey). It is Nationally Vulnerable (Thailand Red Data 2025).
