Forest, caves and buildings

Range

Himalaya through southern China and mainland Southeast Asia

The great Himalayan roundleaf bat is one of the largest Asian Hipposideros. Its broad round noseleaf directs constant-frequency echolocation, and several fleshy lateral leaflets help distinguish it from smaller roundleaf bats. Coat colour varies from brownish to orange among individuals and seasons (Mammal Diversity Database; regional bat field guides).

It ranges from the Himalaya through southern China and mainland Southeast Asia. Colonies use caves, tunnels and sometimes buildings near forest, emerging to hunt large flying insects. Geographic variation has led to several named forms, so size and call measurements from one region are not assumed to characterize every Thai population (species-level acoustic and taxonomic studies). It is Nationally Least Concern (Thailand Red Data 2025).
