Basic stats

Habitat

Montane forest and caves

Range

Himalaya and southern China into northern mainland Southeast Asia

The northern woolly horseshoe bat is a large, densely furred member of Rhinolophus. It was formerly treated within the woolly horseshoe bat Rhinolophus luctus, but current mammal taxonomy recognizes R. perniger as a separate species. This split makes older records and biological observations difficult to assign without locality evidence (Mammal Diversity Database; specialist Rhinolophus taxonomy).

Its verified range extends from the Himalaya and southern China into northern mainland Southeast Asia, including Thailand. It is associated with montane forest and cave roosts and hunts insects using constant-frequency echolocation. Species-specific diet, reproduction and Thai measurements remain insufficiently documented, so values from R. luctus are not transferred (Mammal Diversity Database). No national category is stated because it is not listed under this name in Thailand Red Data 2025.
