Basic stats

Habitat

Forest, including montane forest

Range

Thailand, Malaysia and Indonesia

Francis's woolly horseshoe bat is a recently described member of the trifoliatus group, named in 2015. It has dense woolly fur and a large, elaborate noseleaf; external, cranial, genetic and acoustic evidence separate it from other woolly horseshoe bats. The type locality is montane forest at about 1,600 m in Sabah (original species description; Mammal Diversity Database).

Current records place the species in Thailand, Malaysia and Indonesia, with a named Thai subspecies. Because it was long hidden within a difficult species complex, its precise distribution and ecology remain incompletely known. It is a forest insectivore using nasal echolocation, but unsupported breeding or diet particulars are omitted (original species description; Mammal Diversity Database). It is Nationally Vulnerable (Thailand Red Data 2025).
