Basic stats

Habitat

Limestone caves in evergreen forest

Range

Southern China, Laos, Thailand and Vietnam

Size

Forearm about 3.75–4.04cm

The Thai horseshoe bat is a small Rhinolophus with a forearm around 3.75–4.04 cm in a Vietnamese sample. It was formerly treated by some authors as part of the big-eared horseshoe bat, but current taxonomy recognizes it as a distinct species; genetic resources also list R. huananus as a synonym (Mammal Diversity Database; specialist morphological study).

Its range includes southern China, Laos, Thailand and Vietnam. Natural history remains poorly documented, but available assessments associate it with limestone caves in evergreen forest, where it likely hunts insects using constant-frequency echolocation. Population size, trend and detailed reproductive ecology are not reliably known (IUCN species assessment). It is Nationally Near Threatened (Thailand Red Data 2025).
