Dendrogale murina
Diet
Fruit, arthropods and small vertebrates
Habitat
Tropical forest to about 1,500m
Range
Cambodia, Laos, Thailand and Vietnam
The northern smooth-tailed treeshrew is the smallest living treeshrew and differs from most Tupaia species in its relatively smooth, unbushy tail. It has a pointed muzzle, large eyes and a light, agile body suited to movement among low vegetation and branches. Its range includes Cambodia, Laos, Thailand and Vietnam (Animal Diversity Web; Mammal Diversity Database).
It inhabits tropical forest from lowlands to about 1,500 m. Fruit, arthropods and small vertebrates are recorded foods, while detailed field observations indicate that it searches the forest floor for insects, beetles and spiders. Individuals maintain small territories, though many aspects of reproduction remain poorly known (Animal Diversity Web; integrative treeshrew review). It is Nationally Vulnerable (Thailand Red Data 2025).
