Belomys pearsonii
Range
Eastern Himalaya, mainland Southeast Asia, southern China and Taiwan
Size
Body about 22cm; tail about 13cm
The hairy-footed flying squirrel has reddish-brown upperparts and white underparts, pale rufous sides to the face, rounded dark-tipped ears and dark eyelid margins. Long delicate hairs also fringe the bases of the ears, while longer hair covers the feet and even the claws. Its body is about 22 cm long and its tail about 13 cm (Wikipedia, general species account). It is Nationally Vulnerable (Thailand Red Data 2025).
Across its range it is a mountain animal of the eastern Himalaya, mainland Southeast Asia, southern China and Taiwan. The general account reports it from elevations beginning around 800 m, but the upper figure is not legible in the available source, so it is omitted. Genetic work indicates substantial variation among Taiwanese and Vietnamese populations, making careful species-level sourcing especially important (Wikipedia, general species account).
