Menetes berdmorei
Habitat
Dense understorey of rainforest; also fields and villages, especially rice fields
Range
Eastern Myanmar and Yunnan (southern China) to Vietnam and Cambodia
Size
Head and body about 20cm; tail about 15cm
Berdmore's ground squirrel, also called the Indochinese ground squirrel, is a grey-brown squirrel with a white belly and a beige stripe above a black stripe along each flank. The head is pointed, so it can look like a mouse or a treeshrew. The body is about 20 cm long, not counting a tail of about 15 cm (Wikipedia, general species account).
Despite the name it is not a close relative of the ground squirrels of the tribe Marmotini. It is rarely found in trees and spends most of its time in thick undergrowth in rainforest, but it also turns up in fields and villages, where it can be extremely common around rice fields. Although common, very little is known about its life (Wikipedia, general species account).
