Hylobates agilis
Diet
Mostly ripe fruit, with leaves, flowers and insects
Habitat
Lowland and hill rainforest
Range
Malay Peninsula and Sumatra
The agile gibbon is a small ape with extremely long arms and no tail. Coat colour ranges from black to buff, while adult males have conspicuous pale eyebrows and cheek whiskers. Hook-like hands and mobile shoulders enable rapid arm-over-arm brachiation through the canopy (Animal Diversity Web; specialist gibbon accounts).
It inhabits lowland and hill rainforest on Sumatra and the Malay Peninsula, reaching extreme southern Thailand. Pairs defend territories with coordinated songs and usually live with dependent young. Ripe fruit dominates the diet, supplemented by young leaves, flowers and insects, making the species an important seed disperser (species-level gibbon studies). It is Nationally Critically Endangered (Thailand Red Data 2025).
