Hylobates pileatus

Basic stats

Diet

Fruit, leaves, flowers and insects

Habitat

Evergreen and seasonal forest

Range

Eastern Thailand, western Cambodia and south-western Laos

The pileated gibbon is strongly sexually dichromatic: adult males are black with pale hands, feet and a facial ring, while females are silver-grey with a dark crown and chest. Infants change colour as they mature. Like other gibbons it has long arms and no tail (specialist gibbon account; Mammal Diversity Database).

Its restricted range covers eastern Thailand, western Cambodia and adjacent south-western Laos. Territorial family groups sing complex duets and travel through the canopy by brachiation. Fruit is the principal food, supplemented by leaves, flowers and insects. Forest fragmentation and hunting isolate populations (species-level field studies). It is Nationally Endangered (Thailand Red Data 2025).
