Hylomys peguensis
Diet
Insects, worms and other small invertebrates
Habitat
Moist forest and dense ground cover
Range
Myanmar, Thailand, Laos, Vietnam and southern China
The northern short-tailed gymnure is a small, shrew-like relative of hedgehogs with soft dark-brown fur, a pointed mobile snout and a very short tail. Current taxonomy recognizes Hylomys peguensis separately from several populations formerly grouped under H. suillus (Mammal Diversity Database; specialist gymnure revision).
It ranges through Myanmar, Thailand, Laos, Vietnam and southern China in moist forest and dense ground cover. The animal searches leaf litter for insects, worms and other small invertebrates, relying heavily on smell. Detailed species-specific breeding information remains scarce because older accounts combined multiple Hylomys species (specialist taxonomic revision). No national category is stated because it is not listed under this name in Thailand Red Data 2025.
