The dhole is a reddish, long-legged wild canid with rounded ears, a bushy dark-tipped tail and fewer lower molars than Canis species. It is intensely social: stable packs communicate with whistles and coordinate pursuits, allowing them to subdue prey larger than a single animal (Animal Diversity Web; IUCN species assessment).
Dholes persist patchily across South, East and Southeast Asia in forest, scrub and grassland. Packs primarily hunt deer and other medium to large ungulates, and require extensive landscapes with adequate prey. Depleted prey, habitat fragmentation, persecution and disease from domestic dogs drive declines (IUCN species assessment). It is Nationally Endangered (Thailand Red Data 2025).
