Miniopterus fuliginosus

Basic stats

Diet

Flying insects

Habitat

Caves and forest from lowlands to mountains

Range

South, East and Southeast Asia

The Asian long-fingered bat has exceptionally elongated third fingers and long narrow wings suited to rapid, efficient flight. Its dark fur and folded-back second phalanx are typical of Miniopterus. Genetic work separated Asian M. fuliginosus from the European bent-winged bat complex (Mammal Diversity Database; specialist Miniopterus studies).

It ranges broadly across South, East and Southeast Asia. Large colonies roost in caves and mines, sometimes moving seasonally among sites, and hunt flying insects above forest and open country. Dependence on a network of undisturbed caves makes local populations sensitive to roost loss (species-level cave studies). It is Nationally Least Concern (Thailand Red Data 2025).
