Warm tropical and subtropical coastal waters

Range

Indian and western Pacific oceans

Eden's whale is a medium-sized rorqual with three ridges along the upper head, a strongly falcate dorsal fin and a sleek dark-grey body. It is closely related to the larger offshore Bryde's whale, and the boundary and naming of the two have long been taxonomically contentious (Mammal Diversity Database; NOAA Fisheries).

The species is associated with warm tropical and subtropical coastal waters of the Indian and western Pacific oceans. It feeds by lunging through dense schools of fish and concentrations of crustaceans and may remain in productive warm regions year-round rather than making long polar migrations (NOAA Fisheries). It is Nationally Endangered (Thailand Red Data 2025).
