The maned or Sumatran serow is a dark, goat-like forest bovid with coarse blackish fur, a mane, large ears and short horns that curve backward. Both sexes carry horns. One documented skin measured about 152 cm from nose to tail, but dependable species-wide measurements are limited (Animal Diversity Web).
It inhabits forested mountains and cliffs, recorded from roughly 200 to 3,000 m, on the Malay Peninsula and Sumatra. Usually solitary, it browses leaves, shoots and other vegetation and uses steep terrain as refuge. Hunting and forest loss threaten populations (Animal Diversity Web; IUCN species assessment). It is Nationally Vulnerable (Thailand Red Data 2025).
