Basic stats

Diet

Habitat

Warm temperate and tropical offshore waters

Range

Atlantic, Indian and Pacific oceans

Bryde's whale is a streamlined baleen whale distinguished by three longitudinal ridges on top of the head. Under current treatments, the name Balaenoptera brydei generally applies to the larger, more oceanic form, while Eden's whale is B. edeni; their nomenclature remains debated (Mammal Diversity Database; NOAA Fisheries).

It inhabits warm temperate and tropical offshore waters of the Atlantic, Indian and Pacific oceans. Individuals lunge-feed on schooling fish, krill and other crustaceans, sometimes changing direction rapidly around prey. Because Thai national assessment lists B. edeni rather than B. brydei, no national category is assigned here (NOAA Fisheries; Thailand Red Data 2025).
