Balaenoptera musculus
Diet
Primarily krill
Habitat
Oceanic waters worldwide
Range
All major oceans
The blue whale is the largest known animal, with a long mottled blue-grey body, broad flat head and a very small dorsal fin set far back. Its paired blowholes produce a tall vertical blow. Despite its size, the throat grooves and baleen support feeding chiefly on small crustaceans (NOAA Fisheries).
Blue whales occur in all major oceans, often migrating between high-latitude feeding grounds and lower-latitude breeding areas, though patterns vary among populations. They lunge into dense krill patches and filter prey through baleen. Ship strikes, entanglement and underwater noise remain threats (NOAA Fisheries). It is Nationally Endangered (Thailand Red Data 2025).
