The dwarf sperm whale resembles a small shark at a distance, with a blunt head, underslung jaw and pale false-gill mark behind the eye. It is smaller and has a taller dorsal fin positioned nearer mid-body than the pygmy sperm whale (NOAA Fisheries).

It inhabits deep tropical and temperate waters worldwide, particularly beyond continental shelves, and feeds on squid, fish and crustaceans during deep dives. Usually seen alone or in very small groups, it is inconspicuous at the surface and much evidence comes from strandings (NOAA Fisheries). It is Nationally Endangered (Thailand Red Data 2025).
