Prionodon linsang

Basic stats

Diet

Small vertebrates, insects and eggs

Habitat

Lowland and hill forest

Range

Mainland and Sundaic Southeast Asia

The banded linsang is a slender, cat-like carnivore with pale buff fur crossed by broad dark bands and a very long ringed tail. Retractile claws and flexible limbs suit movement through branches, while its pointed muzzle and sharp teeth reflect a diet dominated by small animal prey (specialist linsang accounts; Mammal Diversity Database).

It inhabits lowland and hill forest in mainland and Sundaic Southeast Asia. Nocturnal and largely solitary, it hunts small mammals, birds, reptiles, insects and eggs both in trees and on the ground, resting by day in tree hollows or concealed nests. Forest loss and hunting remain concerns (IUCN species assessment). It is Nationally Near Threatened (Thailand Red Data 2025).
