Range

Mainland South and Southeast Asia, the Malay Peninsula and Sumatra

Bowers's white-toothed rat is a large murid placed in the genus Berylmys. Its taxonomic history includes earlier placement in Mus and Rattus before specialist revision restored Berylmys as a full genus. Several scientific names formerly applied to regional samples are now treated as synonyms of the same species (integrative systematics study; ITIS).

The species occurs across southern Asia into mainland Southeast Asia, the Malay Peninsula and Sumatra. It is the only member of Berylmys recorded from both the Malay Peninsula and a large Sunda Shelf island. The available specialist sources focus on taxonomy rather than dependable species-wide measurements, diet or reproduction, so those details are omitted (ITIS; integrative systematics study).
