Leopoldamys herberti
Range
Mainland Indochina, including Thailand
Herbert's long-tailed giant rat is a mainland Indochinese murid in the genus Leopoldamys. Its present scientific name, Leopoldamys herberti, was adopted during a revision using morphological and molecular evidence to clarify species limits in continental Indochina. Earlier specimens had been assigned among other long-tailed giant-rat names, making older ecological statements difficult to allocate safely (specialist revision of Leopoldamys).
Confirmed records include Thailand, and distribution modelling identifies northern and central Thailand as important parts of its range. The opened specialist sources address taxonomy and geographic modelling rather than verified species-level measurements, diet or reproduction, so those attributes are omitted. No Thai national category is stated here because the species is not listed in Thailand Red Data 2025 (specialist revision; distribution study).
