Diet
Fruit, seeds, plant material and invertebrates
Habitat
Lowland forest and secondary growth
Range
Mainland and Sundaic Southeast Asia
The Indomalayan long-tailed giant rat is a large forest rodent with coarse brown upperparts, pale underparts, large feet and a tail longer than the head and body. Its size and long, often bicoloured tail distinguish Leopoldamys from most sympatric rats (regional mammal field guides; Mammal Diversity Database).
It ranges through mainland and Sundaic Southeast Asia and is mainly terrestrial in lowland forest and secondary growth, including forest edges. Fruit, seeds, other plant material and invertebrates are eaten, with fallen food often handled in sheltered places (regional ecological studies). It is Nationally Least Concern (Thailand Red Data 2025).
