The Sumatran palm civet, also called the southern palm civet, was described by Thomas Stamford Raffles in 1821. A 2015 study using molecular and morphological data split the former Asian palm civet into three species, and this one covers Sumatra, Java, Peninsular Malaysia, the Indochinese mainland and some smaller islands. Like other palm civets it has a broad head, a narrow muzzle, large rounded ears and a tail nearly as long as the head and body (Wikipedia, general species account).
