Delphinus delphis
Diet
Schooling fish and squid
Habitat
Temperate and tropical offshore waters worldwide
The panglobal common dolphin is a streamlined oceanic dolphin with a long narrow beak and a distinctive hourglass flank pattern: yellowish or tan toward the front and grey toward the rear, beneath a dark cape. Modern taxonomy includes the former long-beaked common dolphin within Delphinus delphis (NOAA Fisheries; Mammal Diversity Database).
It occurs in temperate and tropical seas worldwide, usually in productive offshore waters and sometimes in very large, active groups. Schooling fish and squid dominate the diet, captured cooperatively or individually. Thai records formerly assigned to D. capensis require current taxonomic interpretation (NOAA Fisheries; specialist common-dolphin revision). No national category is stated because it is not listed under this name in Thailand Red Data 2025.
