Basic stats

Diet

Mostly squid

Habitat

Deep temperate and tropical waters near steep shelves

Risso's dolphin has a blunt rounded head without a beak, a tall dorsal fin and a robust body that becomes increasingly covered in pale scars with age. Adults may appear almost white, while calves are darker. Scratches arise largely from social interactions and encounters with squid (NOAA Fisheries; specialist cetacean guide).

It favours deep temperate and tropical water, especially near steep continental shelves and submarine canyons. Squid dominate the diet, captured during deep dives, and groups are usually moderate in size though larger aggregations occur. The species may associate with other dolphins (NOAA Fisheries). It is Nationally Least Concern (Thailand Red Data 2025).
