Rattus andamanensis
Range
Eastern Himalaya and mainland Southeast Asia to southern China, Hainan and several offshore islands
The Indochinese forest rat is a large-bodied Rattus with rich brown upperparts, white underparts and a tail long in relation to the head and body. Specialist examination of type specimens also notes twelve teats, a robust skull, small auditory bullae and large molars. These traits help separate it from other regional rats with which it was historically confused (Mammal Species of the World).
Its range extends from eastern Nepal, Bhutan and north-eastern India through Myanmar, Thailand, Laos, Cambodia and Vietnam to southern China and Hainan. In Thailand it occurs on the mainland north of the Isthmus of Kra and on several islands farther south, including Ko Tao, Ko Pha-ngan and Ko Samui (Mammal Species of the World). It is Nationally Least Concern (Thailand Red Data 2025).
