Mus cervicolor
Habitat
Rice fields and other open agricultural habitats
Range
India and Nepal through Myanmar, Thailand, Laos, Cambodia and Vietnam; also reported from Indonesia
The fawn-coloured mouse is a small, soft-furred Mus with a distinctly short tail, pale orange-brown upperparts and white feet marked with occasional dark hairs. It can occur beside the Ryukyu mouse in rice fields, but differs in its shorter tail, softer coat and more delicate feet (field guide to Asian rodents).
Its documented range extends from India and Nepal through Myanmar, Thailand, Laos, Cambodia and Vietnam, with Indonesia also included in general distribution summaries. Southeast Asian treatments have distinguished lowland and upland forms, but the account here avoids transferring local measurements or ecology across those populations without stronger species-level evidence (field guide to Asian rodents; Wikipedia, general species account). It is Nationally Least Concern (Thailand Red Data 2025).
