Basic stats

Diet

Fish and squid

Habitat

Deep tropical and subtropical waters

The rough-toothed dolphin has a long conical head that slopes smoothly into the beak, unlike the sharply creased forehead of most dolphins. Its name refers to fine vertical wrinkles on the teeth, not an externally rough mouth. The body is dark grey with paler lips and belly (NOAA Fisheries; specialist cetacean guide).

It inhabits deep tropical and subtropical waters worldwide, usually in small to moderate groups. Fish and squid are captured in coordinated pursuits, and individuals sometimes handle prey at the surface. The species may associate with melon-headed whales, bottlenose dolphins and pilot whales (NOAA Fisheries). It is Nationally Least Concern (Thailand Red Data 2025).
