Basic stats

Habitat

Rainforest, deciduous and evergreen forest, secondary forest and altered landscapes

Range

South-central and Southeast Asia, from Pakistan to Vietnam, including Thailand

The northern red muntjac is a small deer that was only recently separated from the southern red muntjac, a split that moved the mainland populations, including those in Thailand, under this name. Males carry short antlers and long upper canines, which they use in territorial and mating disputes (Wikipedia, general species account).

It lives in many forest types, from tropical rainforest to deciduous and evergreen woodland, and copes with secondary forest and landscapes altered by people. Its calls are distinctive barks that serve as alarm signals or contact between individuals. Hunting for meat and body parts and loss of habitat are reducing numbers across its range (Wikipedia, general species account).
