Habitat
Densely wooded upland forest
Range
Tenasserim Mountains of southern Myanmar and western Thailand
Fea's muntjac is a rare small deer of the Tenasserim Mountains in southern Myanmar and western Thailand. Molecular records and museum taxonomy support it as a distinct member of Muntiacus, although reliable field information remains sparse. Like other muntjacs, males have short antlers and enlarged canine teeth used in contests (Mammal Diversity Database; Animal Diversity Web).
It is associated with densely wooded upland habitat and forages mainly on easily digested forest plants, including leaves, herbs, bark, fungi and fruit. It is thought to be mostly solitary and to give a barking alarm call, but much behavioural and reproductive information is inferred from related muntjacs and is therefore not presented here as confirmed for this species (Animal Diversity Web). It is Nationally Endangered (Thailand Red Data 2025).
