The slaty-breasted rail is a medium-sized rail, 25–30 cm long and weighing 100–142 g, with a chestnut crown and nape, a blue-grey breast and a long reddish bill. It is now usually placed in the genus Lewinia (Wikipedia, general species account).
It lives mostly in wetlands, usually below about 1,000 m, though it has been recorded higher elsewhere in its range. It feeds on worms, molluscs, crustaceans and the seeds of marsh plants. Breeding season varies by location; both sexes incubate five to nine eggs for 19–22 days, and the chicks leave the nest soon after hatching and are fed and cared for by their parents (Wikipedia, general species account).
