The Eurasian coot is a rail found in Europe, Asia, Australia, New Zealand and parts of North Africa. It is 36 to 38 cm long with a wingspan of 70 to 80 cm; males weigh about 890 g and females about 750 g. It is largely black except for a white bill and frontal shield, which gave rise to the phrase bald as a coot. The long, strong toes are partly webbed for swimming, and the sexes look alike (Wikipedia, general species account).
Juveniles are paler with a whitish breast and no facial shield. Four subspecies are recognised (Wikipedia, general species account).
