The northern shoveler is a common, widespread duck that breeds in northern Europe, across the Palearctic and over most of North America. It winters in southern Europe, the Indian subcontinent, Southeast Asia, Central America, the Caribbean and northern South America. No living subspecies are recognised. It was moved to the genus Spatula after a 2009 study found the old genus Anas was not a natural group (Wikipedia, general species account).
