Breeds across the Palearctic and locally in eastern Canada; most birds winter further south

The black-headed gull is a small gull that breeds across much of the Palearctic in Europe and Asia, and locally in smaller numbers in coastal eastern Canada. Most of the population is migratory and winters further south, though many remain in the milder parts of northwestern Europe. The species name is Latin for laughing. It is now placed in the genus Chroicocephalus after genetic studies showed that the old genus Larus was not a natural group (Wikipedia, general species account).
