Basic stats

Habitat

Lowland forest and cave or building roosts

Range

Peninsular Thailand and Malaysia to Borneo

The lesser northern free-tailed bat is a fast-flying molossid with long narrow wings and a muscular tail projecting well beyond the tail membrane. Its wrinkled lips and robust skull resemble other Mops, and specialist measurements or acoustic recordings are usually needed for confident identification (Mammal Diversity Database; regional bat field guide).

It has a Sundaic distribution from peninsular Thailand and Malaysia to Borneo. Records come from lowland forest and from colonies using caves or buildings. It emerges into open air to pursue flying insects at speed. Species-specific breeding and Thai population information are scarce, so those fields are omitted (Mammal Diversity Database; regional survey literature). It is Nationally Vulnerable (Thailand Red Data 2025).
