The lesser adjutant is a large stork with an upright stance and a bare head and neck with no pendant pouch. It is 87 to 93 cm long, stands about 110 to 120 cm tall and weighs 4 to 5.71 kg. It is generally smaller than the greater adjutant, with a straight upper bill edge, a paler skullcap, almost all-black upperparts and a white belly and undertail. Breeding adults have a reddish face and orange neck (Wikipedia, general species account).
It is widespread from India through Southeast Asia, is more closely tied to wetlands than the greater adjutant and is solitary and less likely to scavenge. Like others of its genus it retracts its neck in flight (Wikipedia, general species account).
