The jungle cat is a long-legged cat with a slim face, yellow eyes bordered by white lines, rounded ears ending in small dark tufts and a relatively short, ringed tail with a black tip. Its coat ranges from sandy or reddish brown to tawny grey; young animals may be striped and spotted before most markings fade. Adults weigh 4–16 kg and measure 70–120 cm overall (Animal Diversity Web).
It has an exceptionally broad range from North Africa and the Middle East through Central and South Asia to Myanmar, Thailand, Laos, Cambodia, Vietnam and south-western China. Adults are generally solitary outside the breeding season, although male, female and young family groups are also recorded. Rodents form an important part of the diet in studied populations (Animal Diversity Web). It is Nationally Critically Endangered (Thailand Red Data 2025).
