Basic stats

Size

Head and body up to 90cm

Weight

Up to 12kg

The Eurasian otter is a large semiaquatic mustelid with a long streamlined body, flattened head, short limbs, fully webbed feet and a long tapering tail. Dense, waterproof grey-brown fur contrasts with paler cheeks, throat and belly. Head-and-body length can reach 90 cm and weight 12 kg (Mammalian Species account).

It is adapted to hunting in water but also travels over land. Strong claws, webbing and a muscular tail aid swimming, while long whiskers help detect movement around the muzzle. Because the species spans a very broad Eurasian and North African range, this account avoids presenting measurements or diet from European studies as specifically Thai observations (Mammalian Species account). It is Nationally Vulnerable (Thailand Red Data 2025).
