Its elongated pig-like snout and modified teeth help turn soil while feeding; light-coloured claws distinguish it from the Eurasian badger. Adults weigh 7–14 kg, measure 55–70 cm from head to body and have a 12–17 cm tail (Animal Diversity Web).
It ranges from Bangladesh and north-eastern India through Myanmar, Thailand, Laos, Cambodia and Vietnam, probably reaching southern China. Habitats include grassland, mountains, tropical rainforest and evergreen or semi-evergreen forest. Females bear two to four young after a five- to nine-and-a-half-month period that includes delayed implantation (Mammal Diversity Database; Animal Diversity Web). It is Nationally Vulnerable (Thailand Red Data 2025).
