Basic stats

Range

China and mainland Southeast Asia to northern Peninsular Malaysia

The eastern greater false-vampire is a large-eared predatory bat newly recognized as Lyroderma sinense after a 2024 reassessment split eastern populations from L. lyra. Its enormous ears and broad noseleaf aid passive listening and echolocation while locating prey. The taxonomic change means older biological records labelled L. lyra cannot automatically be assigned to this species (Mammal Diversity Database; specialist taxonomic reassessment).

Verified distribution includes China, Cambodia, Laos, Thailand, Vietnam and Malaysia, with Myanmar probable. It roosts in caves and hunts by gleaning large insects and small vertebrates, but this broad feeding description derives from securely identified eastern populations and the revised species diagnosis. Fine-scale reproduction remains poorly documented (specialist taxonomic reassessment). No national category is stated because it is not listed under this name in Thailand Red Data 2025.
