Taphozous theobaldi
Habitat
Caves, rock crevices and buildings
Range
South Asia through Myanmar and Thailand
Theobald's tomb bat is a large sheath-tailed bat with a short tail that emerges through the upper surface of the tail membrane. It has long narrow wings suited to fast, open-air flight and a relatively flat head for sheltering in crevices. Two colour phases, grey-brown and reddish, are recorded (regional bat field guide; Mammal Diversity Database).
Its range extends from South Asia through Myanmar into Thailand. Colonies use caves, rock fissures and buildings, hanging against vertical surfaces before emerging to hunt flying insects high above open ground and forest edges. Roost disturbance is locally important because colonies repeatedly use traditional sites (regional bat field guide; species assessment). It is Nationally Vulnerable (Thailand Red Data 2025).
